How To Hang Buffalo Hides

If you have recently purchased a buffalo hide, you may be wanting to know how to hang buffalo hides for display. Buffalo hides are commonly displayed on the wall and there are a few tried and true methods for hanging them. The first thing to do, however, is make sure your wall is thick enough to withstand the size and weight of the buffalo hide. Once you feel confident your wall can hold the buffalo hide in place, you can the nail the hide onto the wall using simply a hammer and nails.

054 06a How To Hang Buffalo Hides

If you do not want to put numerous nail holes in your wall, you can also hang the buffalo hide using hooks and loop rings. By looping three or four loop rings into your buffalo hide, you can hang the hide from hooks which are secured in the wall. This method creates less wall holes than nails, however, it does make holes in your buffalo hide for the loop rings.

Quilt hangers are an excellent way to display your buffalo hide. Quilt hanger are unfinished clamps of wood, which attach securely to the wall. They hold the buffalo hide in place with a marble. Again, be sure the wall clamps are able to withstand the weight of the hide.

There are other methods of displaying your buffalo hide. Buffalo hides are naturally large in size and can be anywhere between six feet and forty two square feet on length. Their weight can also be up to sixteen pounds. Because of this, many people choose to use their buffalo hides as rugs. Having a buffalo hide as a rug is an excellent idea. The plush hairs of the hide are kept intact, therefore, children and pets have something soft to relax on.

If you chose your buffalo hide for its warmth, buffalo hides make excellent blankets. Their fur and their weight guarantee a night of warm toes. Because of their available sizes, buffalo hides will also cover practically any bed without worry.

Traditionally, Native Americans would use buffalo hides as a body robe. They would wrap the hide over their shoulder to keep out the cold winter air. If you live in a snowy place with freezing temperatures, this would be an excellent way to stay warm.

Buffalo hides can also be used for furniture. If you’re having a difficult time reaching the right height for hanging the buffalo hide on your wall, you might want to consider throwing the hide over a couch like a blanket. This adds warmth and décor to any room. If you are still determined to hang your buffalo hide and having any difficulty, your local hardware store can also give you advise on how to hang buffalo hides.

Brain Tanning Cow Hides

Brain tanning cow hides has been a hide tanning method for thousands of years. From the ancient Egyptians to the modern day cowboy, brain tanning cow hides is strenuous work and not for the faint of heart. Still, many chemicals can be bad for you, bad for the environment, and too rough for the cow hide, therefore, brain tanning cow hides is still used as a tanning method.

054 05a Brain Tanning Cow Hides

If you would like to attempt to brain tan cow hides, here are a few basic steps. The first thing you will be required to do is to separate as much excess fat and skin form the hide as you can manage. Be very careful doing this, as you could slice through the cow hide leaving a tear.

After the cow hide is as clean as you can get it, soak the cow hide overnight in warm water. Completely immerse the cow hide in the water in order to soften the hide. Once this step has been done, you will scrape off the hair and any additional skin or fat from the cow hide. Then, repeat the soaking process and skinning process each day until the hide is pale and clean.  Use clean water each day to avoid rot and bacteria.

Once the cow hide is thoroughly cleaned and de-haired, you will want to prepare the brain solution. For this purpose, one pound of pork brains will be used. Take the pork brains and pulverize them in a blender or food processor until it has a very thin and paste-like consistency. After you have the brains ready, mix the pork brains with warm water. If you use one pound of brains, you will need two gallons of water. The larger the cow hide, the more brains will be required for soaking.

Once the brain soak is prepared, completely soak the cow hide in the brain wash overnight. Make sure that the cow hide is completely covered in the pork brain solution in order to effectively tan the hide. After the cow hide has been allowed to soak for twenty four hours, remove the cow hide and stretch it over a stretcher to dry. The most preferred method is to allow to dry out of the heat and direct sunlight, as this can cause bacteria to form on the hide or the hide can begin to rot. Store outside in cool, dry weather. If it is too hot outside, store indoors in a dark, cool place.

After the cow hide has been allowed to try, you may choose to smoke the hide. To prepare the hide for smoking, wash the hide to remove the brain solution. Use cold water to wash the hide and then hang it out again to dry. After it has dried once again, you will need to smoke the cow hide in a smokehouse, using cedar chips, for approximately six to eight hours.

After it has been smoked, if you want to soften the hide even more, make more braining solution and soak the hide for another few hours and then rinse the hide and work the hide with a clothes wringer or rolling pen until the hide is completely dry and pliable to your preference. Although it is hard work, brain tanning cow hides has been used throughout the ages and is a tried and true method for tanning cow hides.

Bark Tanning Cow Hides

There are many ways of tanning cow hides, including bark tanning cow hides. Many commercial methods use chemicals which are not always very eco friendly. If you are looking for more traditional methods of tanning, bark tanning may be for you.

054 04a Bark Tanning Cow Hides

Bark method is, simply put, the method of using tree bark to tan your cow hide. Tanning a cow hide means that you are preparing the hide and making it into leather in order to preserve the flesh and avoid decomposition for later use. There are many reasons you may want to tan a cow hide. Cow hides are often tanned for their leather for arts and crafts, furniture, clothing and boots, and even horse riding equipment such as saddles.

The Bark method is not the easiest tanning method for cow hides, but it is tried and true. Begin by preparing the cow hide. In order to do this, you will need to separate the hide from the meat using a sharp knife. Once the hide is separated, it is important to clean any excess fat or ligaments from the skin. Use a dull knife for this step, in order to avoid slicing through the hide.

Once you have cleaned the skin, place the hide in water and soak it to soften the hide. This may take a few times and a few days. It is important to keep the water clean to avoid bacteria growth and rot on your cow hide. Make sure to scrape off any excess meat from the hide between each water change. The goal is to get your cow hide clean without any remaining traces of meat. If you are also removing the hair from the cow hide, this can be accomplished the same way as removing the excess fat and meat. Allow the cow hide to soften up before attempting to remove the hair.

Once you have cleaned the cow hide, you will want to prepare the bark. There are a few trees that are most suitable for bark tanning cow hides. Bark from an oak, alder, birch or willow tree is a good choice. Prepare the bark by grinding it up. Then, simmer the bark in warm water to make a pulp. Drain the pulp and them simmer again. You will use approximately one gallon of water per one pound of ground bark, although using less water will create a stronger colored tanning. Because tannin shrinks the hide, use a weak solution first and then gradually change to a stronger solution.

Soak the cow hide in different strengths of solution gradually and over a course of days or weeks until you have the desired color of the hide. Once you have finished and the hide is dry and ready for use, you will have learned how satisfying the job of bark tanning cow hides can be.

If you are not comfortable putting numerous nails into your wall, you can also use wall hooks. By placing circular loop rings on each end of the hide, and one in the center of the hide, you can hang the hide from hooks in the wall using the loop rings.

Processing Of Buffalo Hides Of The American Buffalo

The buffalo hides of the American Buffalo are popular for several reasons. The buffalo provide human beings with food, shelter, and clothing and most importantly, hides. The natives of North America are particularly very proud of the American buffalos and their buffalo hides. These hides are processed into rich, supple and soft leather through a process that is known to these Native Americans from their ancestors. The traditional methods that they use generally transform these hides in to beautiful leather. The complete process is carried out under strict scrutiny and in that they have complete control over the quality of the hides from beginning to end.

02a Processing Of Buffalo Hides Of The American Buffalo

Buffalos produce the best quality hides during 60 days (approximately) a year when they are known to be in their prime. This is the time when they have highest density of hair in its best quality. Also, the hides are purchased during this period to get the best quality.

The process of tanning the buffalo hides is usually a long term process. This is conducted at a tannery and takes approximately 45 days from the inspection to when the hide is ready for sale. When the buffalo hides are received at the tannery, they are immediately inspected for imperfections. The hides are fleshed, salted, rehydrated, shaved (twice), tanned, oiled, dried, tumbled, brushed, tumbled again, brushed again, inspected, sized and graded. The best thing about the processing is that each buffalo hide is treated individually which keeps a check on the quality of the product. Traditionally, tanning involved the use of a chemical known as tannin. However, this has transformed and now a mineral or vegetable method is used. Once the tanning is completed, the buffalo hides are sent for inspection followed by sizing and grading.

Buffalo hides do require some care and maintenance to keep them in the right condition. This is quite simple though. You can vacuum the hide once a week if you use it as a rug. It is safe to use hose on the vacuum cleaner so that the hair do not end up tangled in the brush. You can also use these hides as wall hangings, throw rugs over railings or as a bedspread. They look gorgeous and add a warm feeling to your home. Whatever, you use them for; buffalo hides need to be maintained well for that charming look they are known for.

The Various Uses Of Buffalo Hides

Buffalo hides can be used in many things. As a matter of fact, people use buffalo hides as home decors, bed spreads, rugs on floor and many other interior home decoration items. Buffalo is a vegetarian animal and different kinds of buffalos give different kinds of hides. The highest quality of buffalo hide is known to be soft supple and tanned too. This is the best for using it as a home décor item. Again, just like the type, they also differ in color, size, shape due to different species of buffalos. The quality of the buffalo skin is believed to be of different type depending on the diet of the animal, the health and climatic conditions where the animal lives and the place they are kept in. Buffalo skins are comparatively harder than cow skins and hence when they are processed, the leather is also much soft in nature.

01a The Various Uses Of Buffalo Hides

When the animal is slaughtered or sacrificed as in many cultures, the skin of buffalo is tore in many layers. Different layers of the buffalo hide are used for different purposes. The skin layer is used in the making of jackets is almost of the same thickness as that of a cow’s. However, the ability or power to resist the cuts or tears is more than others. In terms of durability and strength, the buffalo hides are the same as cow hides. In many parts of the world, the buffalo is used as a domestic animal for farming and most importantly, for milking. Buffalos are free grazing animals which also helps them improve their overall health and the quality of their hides. A lot of milk products are derived from the milk of a buffalo. The skin of the animal is used in manufacturing many things including woollen wear.

Winter is the season when the best buffalo hides are received. The leather obtained from buffalo in the winter season is quite different from the leather obtained in summers. After the animal is slaughtered, the skin is skinned and put in salt water. The hide is then transported to the tannery department for tanning. It is after this that the skin becomes absolutely rich and soft ready to be made into leather. This results in design, durability and volume from the original leather.

There are many advantages and rare features of buffalo hides which have become popular in many areas of daily life.
